Laura submitted some of her projects to be featured and one of them really stood out to us, her new interior design studio. I really like the look of the 9’ tall custom bookshelves she designed. They really work well in the space.

I will tell you a little bit about myself and then what I did for my studio.
I’m an interior designer in Dayton, Ohio and just started my design business “Happyroost” in December of last year. I recently opened up a small studio space inside of an antique store in the Oregon Historical District just south of downtown. I wanted my studio to have lots of storage space and lots of different ways to organize samples of fabrics, flooring, paint chips, etc. I also wanted the space to reflect my own personal style as a way to advertise my design services for people coming into the store. I started with the large bookcases that I designed and my father and brother built for me (I’m so lucky to have them to help me!) They are 9′ tall so there’s plenty of shelf space and they certainly make the little area seem more impressive. My desk is a vintage drafting table I bought for cheap off of Craig’s List (gotta love Craig’s List!). The top was pretty rough when I bought it so I sanded it down and painted a kind of faux finish on top. The cowhide rug from Ikea adds to the rustic feel while the black and silver chairs and my contemporary office chair keep it more modern. The green magazine holders and boxes (also Ikea) provide great storage and color while keeping the shelves streamlined and clutter-free. I keep all my old design magazines at the top. They’re out of the way but I still have them to reference when I need to. Last but not least, is the wrought iron light fixture. I actually got this light for free from a friend! I love how it helps bring the high ceilings down to a more personal scale.
I recently had some photos taken of my space by Kathryn Farmer of Pix by Kathryn and I’m proud of how it’s finally coming together! Kathryn is a great photographer and does portraits, among other things, and has a studio in Middletown. Be sure to check out her website!

laura, your office is beautiful and sophisticated w/o being “over designed”. that can be so intimidating to clients so it’s refreshing to see such a welcoming space!
