Monochrome Mudroom – Black and white entry inspiration

Hello again! Dawn here, from DesigningDawn.com, back with another mood board for your decoration inspiration. I tend to gravitate towards lots of colors in my home, but I am also head over heals for neutral monochrome spaces.

There is just something so clean and crisp about a black and white space, and an entry way in particular. This month, I thought I’d take on the challenge of a monochrome black and white entry space for a mood board design. First though, some inspiration photos:

See what I mean? Although I can never help throwing in some color in my own spaces, the lure of monochrome decor is so strong. Well at least I can ogle pretty photos like these and create a mudroom mood board to live out my fantasies (both of a black and white space, and of having an actual mud room… sigh). Here’s what I came up with:

Tips for Creating a Chic Black and White Entry

Mudrooms or entry ways are fun spaces, because they generally don’t require a great amount of decor, but they can have a huge impact. Not only is it the first room that greets visitors to your home, but it is also a space that you see or walk through daily, and changing those everyday ‘pass-through’ spaces from blah to beautiful can have a big impact on your attitude about your home.

To create this monochrome space, I stuck to the basics. I think most good entry spaces need a few things to be really functional (space permitting of course). The first of these is a good rug. Something dark is a good choice in my book, because this is the place you track in lots of that outdoor grime, especially in wet weather.

The second essential is storage, storage and more storage. In my home, we barely have an entry space at all, but I was able to squeeze in a coat-rack and a few baskets to hold winter hats, scarves and gloves. Having a dedicated storage space for those kind of things keeps the floors from getting cluttered and keeps mom from going crazy. Trust me on this one.

If you have the space, the third component of a great entry (we’ll call it nice, but not necessary) is a seating space. This is especially handy if you prefer guests to remove their shoes in your home. Having a space for people to sit down while they do so will help encourage them to respect the no shoes rule. It also makes getting ready to leave the house much easier too, especially for small children or older family members.

Finally, accessorize with a few fun pillows and some artwork to create an inviting and warm space. For this moodboard, I stuck with nature inspired art to bring in a touch of the outdoors to the entryway. And don’t forget the importance of a good mirror, for that last-minute check before you head out!
