Healthy, easy-to-style hair is a must these days if you’re an on-the-go sort of gal – and who isn’t? It feels great to get fancy and spend lots of time getting just the right curl to your hair, but these low maintenance hair tips are what you need for the day-to-day. Start here if you want to get hair that works with you and not against you.

Get the right haircut

Easy hair starts with a good cut. Medium to long hair is usually easiest to maintain, especially when it comes to everyday styling. Lots of layers can make hair more high maintenance, so get a cut that flatters your face shape but has a more even overall cut. Skip the bangs to make styling as easy as possible!

Use a dry shampoo

You’ve heard of it, but have you tried it? It may sound crazy, but washing your hair daily with water and shampoo really isn’t good for it. Too-frequent washing strips your hair of its natural protective oils and can leave you with dry, brittle, and frizzy hair, and that means high maintenance. Make washings last by using a dry shampoo in between to keep hair healthy without looking greasy.

Use a heat protector

Even if you don’t use a curling iron, straightener, or other hot tools very often, use a protective spray every time you do to reduce damage. A good heat protector should also be used before blow-drying.

Try some no-heat hairstyles

If you can avoid the heat, do it! Heat is one of the things that will damage your hair the most. There are so many ways to curl and style your hair, and many of them don’t require a curling iron. Check out these no-heat hairstyles and see which ones work best for your hair.

Avoid too much dyeing

The less you dye your hair, the healthier and lower maintenance it will be. Stick with your natural color or one close to it so that you can go longer between colorings and use a hair sunscreen when you go outside so your color doesn’t fade. Touch up your roots at home rather than visiting the salon every time your hair grows out, or better yet, get an ombre and don’t worry about roots at all!

Arm yourself with some quick, easy hairstyles

Low maintenance hair also means having a few go-to hairstyles so you can look made up even if you only have a few minutes before running out the door. Try a few of these lazy day hairstyles to get you started.

Work with your natural hair

Curly? Wavy? Straight? Run with it. Use a little styling serum to get the right curl or enhance your waves for a beachy look. Straight hair looks amazing with the right cut, and you can get away with more layers. Hair grows in one direction around your head, so your hair probably turns out on one side and in on the other – stop fighting it. Part and curl hair in the direction it wants to go. Embrace what you have and find ways to make it work for you.
