Light and Bright 1950’s Ranch Kitchen Makeover

I’m not sure what is more impressive about this kitchen: the light, open transformation, or the fact that a couple of brave DIY-ers completed the renovation for less than $10K! Wait until you see all the details, and you’ll know what I mean.

I love the white cabinetry in this kitchen makeover paired with accessories in bright, summery hues and metallics. It reminded me of a few other kitchen re-dos I’ve been crushing on lately. (Check out more of my favorites on my Pinterest boards. I’d love it if you’d follow me!)

Back at Cape 27, Jessie and her husband started out with a dowdy, outdated galley kitchen. They kept costs down by maintaining the original footprint of the kitchen. Opening the space up by removing walls gave them room to add a super-functional island and added lots of light. Learn how they did it, below.

Hi! I’m Jessie, a wife and mother of two girls under two. My husband and I purchased our second home, a 1950’s ranch, that was in dire need of some TLC. We’ve spent the past six months renovating and DIYing nearly every project we can get our hands on, our first major one being the kitchen. On a tight budget of just 10K to completely gut and rebuild the space from scratch, it’s been quite a ride! Hope you all enjoy the results as much as we do!

Since moving into our house two months ago we’ve knocked down major walls separating the kitchen from the rest of the home, updated the electric and plumbing, installed new hardwood flooring, replaced all the upper and lower cabinets, and added a butcher block island. We updated to stainless steel appliances, soapstone countertops, and installed a subway tile backsplash. We also added recessed lighting, pendants, and under-cabinet lighting throughout. Oh, and added a new addition (baby Lizzy) to the family just days before moving in. Whew. It’s been a wild ride. Now, onto before and afters!

There’s just something special about walking into a room that you’ve literally re-built from the ground up. Try it sometime.

The industrial vibe streaming from the pendants and metal stools makes me a little weak in the knees. One of the perks of being married to an electrician is fantastic lighting!

Shiny chrome faucet = happy wife.

Lets not even get started on the range wall. No wait, lets. Subway tile to the ceiling. Best move yet. She beams from across the room…

I’m happy to share the sources and prices for our kitchen remodel with you.

  1. This kitchen is absolutely gorgeous! I love every single thing about it! We currently have a portable dishwasher that is also our make shift island and has a butcher block top. I absolutely love having the butcher block but would love a full size island like this even more. 🙂 Great job on transforming your kitchen and with such a great price!

  2. Love the kitchen remodel! Looks like my kitchen floor plan. I would love to see a picture of the other side of the kitchen where the wall use to be that closed it off, and a picture where the old peninsula use to be.
    Great job!
