Favorite Comfort Foods for Fall… With A Twist

Mmmm… something about fall just puts me in the mood for some of my favorite comfort foods. Everything that was unappealing during the hot summer days and nights just sounds so good once it’s sweater weather again. Chicken pot pie, lasagna, chicken noodle soup — yum! Everyone has their own favorite family recipes for these traditional foods, but sometimes a twist on tradition is nice. So I have two new twists on each of ten of my favorite cozy-up-and-read comfort foods for you.

And don’t forget to scroll down a bit and join our weekend Remodelaholics Anonymous party to strut your DIY stuff!

Country Biscuits

What is more delicious on a chilly day than biscuits and gravy? Try these herbed buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy from Bev Cooks, or really mix it up (and store some extra, er, insulation for winter!) with Oh Sweet Basil’s heart attack : biscuits and gravy with cheese, bacon, and fried chicken.

Grilled Cheese

A warm, crispy grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of creamy tomato soup make any rainy day just about perfect. Jazz it up with two new variations: caprese grilled cheese from Simply Gloria and guacamole grilled cheese from Two Peas and Their Pod.

Mac & Cheese

Ooey-gooey cheese and perfectly tender noodles make for a hit with the whole family! Bakerette shared her perfect mac and cheese for grown-ups here on Remodelaholic, and the tomatoes in this mac and cheese from Cooking Light use up any remaining end-of-summer garden tomatoes.

Lasagna

A good lasagna is worth its weight in gold, am-I-right? Try two new takes on this family favorite: hearty lasagna soup from A Farm Girl Dabbles and healthier (and gluten free!) zucchini lasagna from Skinny Taste.

Mashed Potatoes

It’s hard to beat a good helping of creamy mashed potatoes. Simplify the cooking by making them in the slow cooker like First A Dream, or make a healthy alternative with this recipe for creamy cauliflower puree from Skinny Taste.

Chicken Pot Pie

I love one-dish meals, and I count chicken pot pie since it has grain in the crust, protein in the chicken, and plenty of veggies! Give these chicken pot pie biscuits from Life in the Lofthouse a try, or put it in a bowl with this chicken pot pie soup from Skinny Taste.

Chicken Alfredo

A creamy and perfectly seasoned alfredo sauce is a thing of beauty, and a meal my whole family loves. Combine it with a pizza and make these chicken alfredo french bread pizzas from What’s Cooking With Ruthie or think healthy with this spaghetti squash alfredo from The Comfort of Cooking.

Meatloaf

A well-cooked meatloaf is classic and delicious, but might not be a meal your family looks forward to. Make their eyes light up by making mini meatloaves, like these meatloaf cupcakes by First Look Then Cook or these mini chicken parmesan meatloaves from Grocery Eats.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Whether you’re feeling a touch under the weather or just want a delicious meal, you can’t beat a homemade chicken noodle soup! Try one of these variations: creamy chicken noodle soup with brie, spinach, and artichokes from The Kitchen is My Playground or Moroccan chicken noodle soup (with squash noodles!) from Meatified.

Chicken Noodle Soup

No comfort food list would be complete without some delicious homemade rolls. Try these Texas Roadhouse sweet rolls with special butter from Chef in Training, or mix it up and try this recipe for pesto rolls from Favorite Family Recipes.
